Math Counts

MATHCOUNTS is for 6th – 8th graders who would like to get together with others to work on challenging math problems.  It meets in Mr. Mueller’s room after school until 4:00 pm on Tuesdays and on selected Friday mornings 7:30 – 8:00 am beginning in the Fall.  Ten students from East and West will compete in St. Cloud in February.

MATHCOUNTS is open to all students in grades 6-8 and met as follows last season:

  • Tuesdays at MS East in room B212 from 3:10-4 p.m.
  • Thursdays at MS West in Mr. Kucera’s room from 3:15-4 p.m.
  • Students work on challenging math problems during practice, employing a variety of problem solving strategies.
  • Students will participate in an STMA MATHCOUNTS competition in mid-January.
  • Ten students will be selected to compete in the regional competition. Criteria for selection will include (but is not limited to) STMA competition results, attendance at practices, effort at practices, and previous MATHCOUNTS experience.
  • The ten students competing in the regional competition will continue to practice until the regional competition. The schedule for those practices will be daily and posted on the calendar in the Google Classroom. Students will be excused from school to compete that day. These are the only students who will need to register online and pay the $62.50 activity fee.

Mathcounts Competition Highlights from Feb. 7 at St. Cloud State

The STMA Middle Schools MathCounts Team traveled to Saint Cloud State Tuesday, February 7th to compete in the Lake Region Chapter Competition. Three Middle School East Students cracked the top ten! Natalie W. finished 8th, Lucas D. finished 7th, and Zara M. came in 5th place overall.

The competition was tough and our STMA team came in 5th place. Lucas D. made the final four of the stressful, in front of an audience, head to head countdown round. Congratulations Mathletes on a great season!
