Math Counts

MathCounts is a national middle school math program that helps students build problem-solving skills while having fun tackling challenging math problems. The program includes exciting “bee-style” competitions—similar to a spelling bee, but for math!

Any 6th–8th grade student who enjoys working through challenging math problems with others is welcome to join. The MathCounts season at STMA begins in late October and meets once a week through December.

In January, a school competition is held to select ten students from both Middle School East and Middle School West to represent STMA at the Regional Competition held at St. Cloud State University in early February. Depending on the results at Regionals, qualifying students may advance to the State Competition in March.

  • Ten students will be selected to compete in the regional competition. Criteria for selection will include (but is not limited to) STMA competition results, attendance at practices, effort at practices, and previous MATHCOUNTS experience.
  • The ten students competing in the regional competition will continue to practice until the regional competition. The schedule for those practices will be daily and posted on the calendar in the Google Classroom. Students will be excused from school to compete that day. These are the only students who will need to register online and pay the $62.50 activity fee.
